Swimming is a publication based on Liz W. Garcia’s debut feature film The Lifeguard. It features a riso-printed zine, a folded coloured poster and a small offset-printed greetings card. This ensemble tries to bottle up the sense of inspiration and creativity one might be filled with after watching a movie - or experience any piece of audiovisual art.
Upon the pages of the zine, we find moments from The Lifeguard captured through drawing mixing with literary references, different materials and cut-ups, thus displaying a layout of the mind of the observer, letting themselves gradually be absorbed by the movie’s characters and ambiance. The aquatic visual references in the book are related to the primary setting of Garcia’s big screen debut: a public swimming pool around which the main plot unfolds. Among the abundance of varied compositions that hover through the pages of this book, a love story’s tragic fate slowly burst to the surface.
