Based in Paris, João Delfim is a visual artist, art director and poet originally from Porto, Portugal. After obtaining a Master’s degree in Printmaking from the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, he has developed a series of self-publications, using traditional etching techniques to create handcrafted artist books and zines as illustrated, two-dimensional worlds for his poetry. As an emerging printmaker and editorial designer, João draws inspiration from the vintage zine aesthetic and his work often references coming-of-age and homoerotic themes in Western cinema and television culture (John Greyson, Edmund White, Oscar Wilde).
Born in a fishing town in the north of Portugal, where he lived until he was eighteen years old, João’s work often references Portuguese literature and his hometown’s folklore — notably relating to aquatic themes. As an experimental videographer and creative director, João specialises in music video direction and visual collaborations with musicians and performers, in which his passion for both Cinema and Printmaking come together to serve his progressive building of a baroque and magical visual universe of his own.

O seu trabalho apresenta-se como uma coleção de publicações independentes, aliando a técnica artesanal da gravura à impressão digital e à fotocópia, para criar livros de artista que concebe como mundos bidimensionais ilustrados para acolher a sua poesia. Como designer editorial emergente, João inspira-se na estética do “cut-off” e dos fanzines dos anos oitenta para criar projetos à volta de temas homoeróticos e historias de amadurecimento (“coming-of-age”) na literatura e cinema ocidentais, tendo como referências nomeadamente John Greyson, Edmund White e Oscar Wilde.
