As a companion to the artist book Firecrackers in the Attic, I have created an experimental short film — titled Le feu du ciel qui fut. This visual experience displays a fleeting portrayal of Alain-Founrier’s Le Grand Meaulnes’ title character, Augustin Meaulnes, as he is seen through the eyes of young narrator François Seurel. Though continuously inviting him to come with him on his next adventure, Meaulnes ends up never taking François along, leaving the youth with nothing but the bittersweet taste of an unaccomplished journey.
The score was composed by French musician Léo Petitot — who also served as the model for Frantz de Galais in the photographs featured in the artist book — thus providing a full circle moment in which glances of François’ platonic love for Meaulnes are edited together, to the sound of Frantz playing the piano.
