Maëlstrom is a collaborative project created with indie pop emerging French band Flocon. As an Art Director for the band’s debut homonymous concept-album, I developed a visual universe befitting their musical identity. Childhood remembrance and Solastalgia are some of the key themes explored by Flocon in their debut record.
Maëlstrom was conceived as a collective journey. We aimed to introduce the public to our whimsical world by revealing the first single through a music video and disposable-camera shots. Starting with Le Mal du Pays, a french-touch dance song evoking childhood memories in natural landscapes, Maëlstrom’s tidal wave brings to surface an ensemble of music videos. Among enchanted forest landscapes leading to shimmering waterways, the first episode of this audiovisual journey whisks us away to a fantasy world where childhood memories are restored as an ode to a once flourishing biodiversity, now endangered more than ever.
Maëlstrom’s closing chapter, Harmonie du Soir, is an electro pop ballad inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s homonymous poem from Les Fleurs du Mal. As its music video director, I wanted to capture the feelings of both internal and external rest the author evokes. This final visual adventure transports us into two parallel worlds: firstly, a warm-tinted, nightly moment of intimacy, followed by a dream-like series of landscapes serving as manifestations of one’s deepest thoughts and imaginative wanderings.
