Romantic, passionate, subtle, vibrant, Lilies is a parallel world beautifully created by Canadian director John Greyson that one cannot help but be drawn into from the film’s first minutes. Presented as a tale of revenge of a man, Simon, wrongly convicted for his young lover’s murder in his youth, upon Jean Bilodeau, a past acquaintance of both, now a man of religion, and the actual perpetrator of this tragedy.
I Shall Be Reborn — named after a direct quote regarding Simon and Vallier’s love in the film — is a limited edition artist book, created as a celebration of John Greyson’s unforgettable work of art and including a captivating, exclusive interview with the director himself.

Based on Michel Marc Bouchard’s homonymous play from 1985, the film is set in a Quebec prison in 1952. Local bishop Bilodeau is called upon to hear the confession of dying inmate Simon Doucet. However, he quickly understands that Simon’s intentions are, in fact, to get a confession from him. Simon has enlisted his fellow prison inmates to stage a play set in 1912, when Bilodeau and Doucet were childhood companions. Hence, most of the film consists of the development of this play within the play, presenting to us a coming-of-age story of three young boys from Roberval — Simon, Bilodeau, and Vallier — as they face the challenges of growing up gay in a small town.

We quickly understand that Simon has a secret romantic relationship with Vallier, even if the latter is much more comfortable with his sexuality than the former. Bilodeau, though being the most closeted of the three, is stuck in the middle of his sexual awakening, motivated by the role Simon has of Saint-Sebastian in a school play they are all part of. He goes on to develop an unrequited love for Simon, which will result in a form of rivalry with Vallier and ultimately culminate in Bilodeau being responsible for his death.
